What you should know about Appelsbosch
Appelsbosch Farm is situated outside of Swellendam at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains.
Appelsbosch is also host to many Appelsbosch Vlei is a fantastic natural outdoor available for many different uses.
We believe in a holistic approach to horse training and keeping. As riding horses is not natural to the horse, we strive to keep our approach as pleasant and ethical as possible. Our training techniques are based on evidence based scientific research and the horse’s welfare and also horse and the rider’s safety are paramount at all levels of interaction. A lot of our techniques and principles of training come from the work of Dr Andrew Mclean and the work of the international Society of Equitation Science. We take into consideration how the animal lives, behaves, how it learns and how it socialises in order to develop an uncomplicated language of communication between horse and rider. Our farm is home to 500 dairy cows, heiffers and calves. We also breed Horses and enjoy our free range potbelly(ish) pigs and chickens. A half day full of fun farm activities, grooming, feeding, riding and much more. A short walk around the farm on the lead rein or accompanied by handlers on foot. We would like to introduce you to the wonderful world of our horses and horse riding, for the more cautious we will spend some time getting to know them from the ground and depending on your progress we might start you out with the basics of riding. Progress in a session is dependant on each individual. Skill level: Some previous riding experience (basic walk, trot), relaxed around horses and comfortable on horse back. Scenic Trail Ride: R300pp (1-2pax per session) Skill level: Some previous riding experience (basic walk, trot, canter), relaxed around horses What we do: We will quickly introduce our language of communication with our horses so that you will be in control during the trail ride and so that the experience remains a pleasant one for our horses.Then we will set off for a beautiful scenic ride on the farm.
